baby gullies

This summer, for the first time in the history of living here, a gull set up his nest by the harbour, behind our house. Dad watched them every single day with his "spy-glasses" (aka binoculars), worrying about their survival. They faced some pretty close calls. Like when an evil bird tried to attack the nest, and the time when they had to replace the light and risked disturbing them altogether.
Unfourtunate was the day that Dad finally said that they didn't make it.
I don't even know the cause, but the spot they chose is kind of vulnerable.
We were hoping for the best.
That's why I'll always be glad I took the time to take a few pictures of them one morning.
Mostly for my Dad, since I love seeing him get so excited about nature.
For such a serious seeming man, he loves animals and it's really endearing.
I also never thought I'd consider gulls adorable,
but these little babies were the cutest, fluffiest creatures I've ever seen.

a sisterly excursion

Yesterday, Catherine and I took a little drive and wandered over to a town called Dildo. Modernly known as such an unfortunately crude word, I wouldn't want to change it and it's not so strange when know the history behind it!

The French had originally named it "d'îles deux," most likely for the two islands that rest just outside the harbour of the quaint little community. "Dildo" probably happened when our lovely accents tried to pronounce it.

Either way, we were excited to meet Captain Dildo, and visit the cute little shop he was in front of. We bought a couple of little things then drove through the town to take it all in. We also explored a couple of spots in the surrounding areas, Old Shop and Markland and found they sounded a lot cuter than they were; great for a drive, which is what we wanted. It was a lovely little day trip and a lot closer to home than I realized. Or maybe it was just that time passed really quickly as we sang along to songs on shuffle and yelled out every sign we passed along the way.

Here's to more trips like these!

once upon a winter's day

If we look like we’re having a blast, you’d be right! I had some quick business to take care of downtown on Monday and had invited Robyn to come along for company. I'm super thankful that the weather cooperated because we had sooo much fun running around enjoying the rare afternoon of sunshine while capturing a few of our favourite spots. I'm glad to have finally put the video option on my new camera to good use and Robyn took her editing skills up yet another notch on the uhhmazing scale. I get so mushy happy every time I watch it. Thanks for being silly with me, Robz!

wide, wide as the ocean

Last week, September 30th to be exact, I went along with my father and sister on a little afternoon fishing trip.

The food fishery was on and the waves were few so we went out to see what we could catch. It was my first time out on the water in quite some time. Unfortunately Mom wasn't feeling well, and Elizabeth had to wait on a call for work so they didn't join us.

We packed up the boat with everything we needed. Well, except for a snack! We had already started our journey when I regretted not grabbing a package of crackers before I left the house. Not for its seasick-calming effect, but for its hunger curbing powers.

I feel like fishing and crackers go really well together.

It was probably my most pleasant fishing experience I've ever had in the history of fishing with my family.

Catherine was the first to get a nibble on her line.

And it was a big one.

She wanted to pass it off to Dad so we wouldn't lose it, but he was busy with my fishing pole instead. She let me hold it, but since it was the first fish/a big fish and I wasn't used to reeling things in at the time, I kinda lost the big fish. I felt a little bad about it, but mostly thought it was funny. It was funny because Catherine was "rotted" at me for the remainder of the trip and would not let it go. Even to the end.

I happened to attract and catch the next fish, and it ended up being the biggest fish of the day.

She caught the next one though not long after (thank goodness!) so it appeased her slightly.

We caught other beauties too. :P

Catherine cut the cods throats for them. Don't trust her when she's in this state of mind.

The weather has been amazing so far since I've been back on this beautiful, rocky soil and I'm glad we were able to appreciate it in this way for a few hours. The day was like this for most of our trip.

A few other folks were catching their quota as well. A lovely couple happened to have crackers and gave us some! I was incredibly grateful!

The wind picked up so we had to put on our jackets and soon after, headed back to the harbour. It was a good day.

Here are some videos from the day. I was sort of yelling because I didn`t know if the motor was going to drown out all of the sound, but you could hear us pretty well after all.
